Changing the World One Wrap at a Time - @Morethanawrap_ #Featured

Hey there queen! Tell us a bit about yourself...

My name is Antoinette, but many know me as Janel. I am a social human being who loves to hangout with my girlfriends, visit family, make people laugh and speak to customer service representatives like they are my bestfriends.

I am a social worker, civil rights activist, food junkie and lifelong learner. I am passionate about things I like and once it's ignited, there's no stopping me. Therefore, when I encountered friends, family and strangers asking me how I styled my wraps, I knew I wanted to help inspire others how to do the same. I have an Instagram page dedicated to those who desire to learn how to wrap different styles. It not only provides tutorials for curious minds, but photos from other men/women for headwrap inspiration.

Welcome to the Asikara blog! We saw your Headwrap content and had to reach out - tell us more about your brand @MoreThanaWrap

I created More Than A Wrap as a way to share my love for headwraps. I've been styling my headwraps for years and during that time, I was continuously encouraged by other women to teach how I styled them.

When I wear a Headwrap I feel confident, and I want others to feel just as beautiful. To me, headwraps are more than a wrap. They exemplify your individuality and allow you to showcase your beauty in so many ways. That is why I put on my page 'to style YOUR story' because when we wear our wraps, we exude our creativity - our own personal style.

Wraps tell a story to me and that's why I put the hashtag #WrapStory for my tutorials as well. Sometimes a certain wrap can trigger a memory, and I love to share those moments with others.

My goal is to continue uplifting Queens to wrap their crowns with confidence and to support them through their journey. It's about women empowerment as well as sharing tips on how to improve their techniques. As I learn from other small business owners, I, too, would love to start my own business selling headwraps. The love I receive is incredible, and I know with their continued support nothing is impossible. Stay tuned!

There were moments when I felt I wasn't at the same pace as others. I had to take deep breaths and remind myself through positive affirmations that I am on Janel's time and no one else's. You are your only competition, and you are only self-defeating by comparing yourself to others.

Well if you need any tips and pointers we are here to help! It's so inspiring to hear that you want to share your love with the world! What is your go-to headwrap style?

My favorite headwrap style is the bow. I love this style because it is a bold structured look, and you can do different variations of it. It's my go to style and to me, it's very simple. Plus, once I mastered it, you couldn't tell me anything. I was strutting to every occasion with confidence rocking this style.

I love the confidence! Yes girl! Own it! We just added some jersey wraps to our store and we are loving them! Which type of wraps do you like the best - African Print or Jersey?

Wow. This is such a hard question. I love both, but I would have to go with the jersey wraps. At times, jersey wraps are much more flexible to work with, and I tend to wrap my crown much faster when I wear a jersey wrap.

I hear that! I hadn't worn a Jersey wrap until last month! I think both wrap styles are great but for different reasons so I now love both! Who would you say is your biggest wrap inspiration?

I began wrapping my crown in college. I didn't have any family or friends that wore Headwraps. Therefore, I went to Instagram for inspiration, and I found Fanm Djanm. I immediately fell in love with the page, and of course, the wraps. Paola, the founder of Fanm Djanm, style was chic, and I truly admired her work ethic and creativity. She had a vision, and it's amazing how much her business has grown.

My goal is to continue uplifting Queens to wrap their crowns with confidence and to support them through their journey.

She is definitely one of my inspirations also. I look up to her in such a huge way. Her brand is AMAZING!

It's been such a tough year but girl, we see you GLOWING! What lessons have you learnt in 2020? What are your 2021 goals?

The year 2020 has given me many lessons, but there is one that sticks with me. Greatness takes time. You can't rush your process. There were moments when I felt I wasn't at the same pace as others. I had to take deep breaths and remind myself through positive affirmations that I am on Janel's time and no one else's. You are your only competition, and you are only self-defeating by comparing yourself to others. I learned to stay persistent in working towards my goals but to also be kind to myself when things weren't going as planned.

I have BIG goals for 2021. I get so excited that I want to dance. My goal is to keep motivating myself for greatness. I am going to continue creating headwrap tutorials, and I plan to start my own business and begin a new journey.

We want to be the first to wish you all the best with your goals! If you can dream it you can achieve it. You got this! What would you say has been your proudest achievement?

I am a proud member of the world's largest and oldest civil rights organization. I was appointed as the Political Action Chair of my branch, and I was tasked to mobilize the members as well as the community to vote for the 2020 Presidential Election. Even during a global pandemic, I was able to partner with over 25 local organizations to register people to vote and successfully organized a Get Out to Vote plan. With over 40 volunteers, we were able to text over 25,000 people in battle ground states in the U.S. to encourage them to vote, provide transportation and assist in phone banking. My leadership, along with others, helped to make a difference not only locally but nationally.

Pour into yourself as much as you pour into others.

Sis! You really are making great movements. Keep pushing, growing and impacting this world. It's beautiful to see. I know we're in the middle of a pandemic BUT if you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

As a child, I became fascinated with Alaska. There was something magical about this state, and I just knew I would go to college there. If you are wondering if I did, nope, I didn't. I've always been fascinated by the northern lights, wildlife and the glaciers. Every time I think about planning a trip, no one ever wants to go with me because it's not an ideal vacation. I guess it's time to do a solo trip.

Hahaha! I can't lie I was also thinking it's not my portion, the beach is my scene! But enjoy your solo trip...If you could be remembered for one thing, what would you want it to be?

If I could be remembered for one thing, I hope it would be my positive energy. I like to view situations as glass half full. Life is so short to not be happy. I try to bring joy to everyone I meet, and I hope if anything, people always remember that.

We need a little bit more positivity, especially now. Please sprinkle some positive vibes all over 2021! I could literally interview you all day but what is your favourite quote/mantra?

Pour into yourself as much as you pour into others. Oftentimes, we lose sight of how much we give to others whether it's our time, love, and kindness. We need to shower ourselves with the same amount of love we give to others.

I think that's my 2020 lesson - you're no use to others when you're not okay yourself! Any top tip you can leave with us?

Once you find a headwrap and style you like, practice. Find different fabrics that work for you and practice, practice, practice. In a very short time, you will see the growth and feel really proud of yourself.

And that marks the end of our interview. So glad we invited you to the Asikara blog today! How can we keep in touch with you?
